How We Reimagined the Shampoo Bar for a New Era with The Dough Method

We’ve cracked the code, and I can hardly contain my excitement! If you’ve been following our journey at Wixy Soap, you know that our mission, our "Live Free" Clean Standard is all about innovation without compromise. We don’t just want to make products that work; we want to make products that redefine what’s possible in your daily routine. I am beyond thrilled to pull back the curtain on our latest and most significant breakthrough yet: the Dough Style Shampoo Bar.

This isn't just a minor tweak to an old recipe. This is a complete reimagining of how a solid shampoo is built, from the molecules up. It’s the result of months of trial, error, science, and a little bit of creative "dough" play. But before we dive into the nitty-gritty of why this method is a total game-changer, I want to invite you into the space where all this magic happens.

A Gathering Place: The Wixy Soap Studio

Innovation doesn't happen in a vacuum; it happens in a community. When you visit us, you won’t find a cold, industrial factory. Instead, you’ll find our quaint, cozy studio located at 1454 Lakeland Village Blvd in Sherwood Park. We are right at the end of the street, nestled in a spot that feels like a creative sanctuary.

The moment you step through the door, you’ll see the heart of our operations: "the long long table." This table isn’t just furniture; it’s a philosophy. We designed this space to be intimate and social. In our classes, this long table ensures that every single student has a front-row seat to the chemistry and the craft. There’s no back row here. You can hear every instruction, see every measurement, and most importantly connect with the fellow makers sitting right beside you. It’s a place where questions are encouraged, mistakes are just learning opportunities, and the shared excitement of creating something beautiful creates an energy you won't find anywhere else.

It was at this very table, surrounded by the scent of essential oils and the hum of creative energy, that the Dough Style method was born.

A Trip Down Memory Lane: The Surprising History of Shampoo Bars

To understand why our new method is so revolutionary, we have to look back at where shampoo bars came from. Believe it or not, the "shampoo bar" isn't a new invention, it's a return to form.

Before the 1930s, liquid shampoo as we know it didn't really exist. If you wanted to wash your hair, you used a bar of soap. People used natural cleansers like soapwort or yucca root, or simple bars made from tallow and lye. While effective at cleaning, these early bars often left hair feeling "waxy" or straw-like because they were true soaps with a high pH, which causes the hair cuticle to swell and roughen.

The 1930s brought a seismic shift. In 1930, a German pharmacist named Hans Schwarzkopf introduced the first liquid shampoo, and shortly after, "Drene" the first modern synthetic detergent-based shampoo, was launched by Procter & Gamble. This was the "Great Liquification." Liquid shampoo was marketed as the height of luxury and convenience. It was easier to lather, it felt "smoother," and it came in fancy bottles. For decades, the solid bar was relegated to the history books, viewed as a relic of a less sophisticated time.

But convenience came at a cost. We eventually realized that liquid shampoos are mostly water (often up to 80-90%), requiring plastic bottles that clog our oceans and chemical preservatives to keep that water from growing bacteria.

The modern resurgence of the shampoo bar is a response to this. We’ve realized that we can have the sophisticated chemistry of modern hair care without the plastic waste. However, as many DIY makers and small businesses discovered, making a good shampoo bar is surprisingly difficult.

The Challenge: The Quest for the Perfect Bar

For years, the industry standard for making shampoo bars involved a "melt and pour" approach or a very dry "press" method. These worked okay with older surfactants, but as we moved toward higher-quality, gentler ingredients, we hit a wall.

At Wixy Soap, we transitioned to a new, high-performance SCI formula(Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate). SCI, often called "Baby Foam," is a surfactant derived from coconut oil. It is incredibly gentle, provides a rich, creamy lather, and has a much lower pH than traditional soap, making it perfect for hair.

However, SCI is a temperamental beast. When we tried to use traditional methods with our new SCI-heavy formula, we ran into a frustrating problem: The Soft Bar Syndrome. The bars would take forever to harden, and even when they did, they would often turn into a "mushy mess" in the shower after just a few uses. They weren't professional, they weren't durable, and they didn't meet the "Live Free" standard.

I knew there had to be a better way. I wanted a bar that was rock-solid, professional-looking, and efficient to produce.

The Breakthrough: The "Dough Style" Discovery

The breakthrough happened when I stopped trying to treat the ingredients like a liquid to be poured and started treating them like a dough to be worked.

The Dough Style method is exactly what it sounds like. By precisely balancing our SCI formula with specific binders and conditioners, we create a material that has the consistency of a pliable cookie dough. Instead of waiting for a liquid to set, we "knead" the formula, ensuring every grain of SCI is perfectly coated and integrated.

Why This Changes Everything:

  1. No More Soft Bars: Because we aren't "melting" the ingredients into a liquid state, the bars are structurally sound from the very beginning. Once they are pressed, they stay solid. They don't mush, they don't crumble, and they last significantly longer in your shower.
  2. Game-Changing Efficiency: This is a massive win for us and for you. Since adopting the dough method, we can make sample bars 2x faster. We no longer have to wait hours or days for bars to set up before we can handle or package them. For a small business like ours, that time saved is time we can spend on further innovation.
  3. Professional Aesthetics: These bars look like they belong in a high-end salon. They have a smooth, matte finish and a weightiness that feels premium.
  4. Consistency in Every Batch: The dough method allows for much more precise control over the distribution of active ingredients. Every bar in the batch is identical in performance and quality.

Better Classes, Better Kits, Better Results

This breakthrough doesn't just stay in our lab; it's the new foundation for everything we offer.

Our DIY Shampoo Bar Kits have been completely updated to the Dough Style method. We’ve found that this method is significantly more "forgiving" for beginners. When you're working with a dough, you can feel the texture and know exactly when it's ready. It takes the guesswork out of the process, ensuring that even your very first bar at home is a success.

In our In-Studio Classes, the dough method has made the learning experience even more interactive. There’s something deeply satisfying about getting your hands into the material, feeling the transformation as the powders and liquids become a cohesive "dough." Sitting around that long long table, sharing that tactile experience, is what making is all about.

A Personal Note: Why I’m So Proud of This Recipe

I’m not just the owner of Wixy Soap; I’m a customer. I have high standards for my own hair, and I’ll be honest, I’ve tried dozens of shampoo bars over the years that just didn't make the cut. They either left my hair feeling stripped or weighed down by too much wax.

I am incredibly proud of this Dough Style recipe because it is the first one that I can say, without hesitation, works better for my hair than any liquid shampoo I’ve ever used. My hair feels light, clean, and incredibly soft. I’ve noticed a significant reduction in frizz, and I love the fact that I’m not throwing away a plastic bottle every month.

When I see a tray of these bars sitting in the studio, rock-solid and beautifully scented, I feel a sense of pride that is hard to put into words. It’s the pride of knowing we didn't take the easy way out. We didn't settle for "good enough." we pushed through the frustration of the soft bars to find a method that truly delivers on our promise of quality.

Stop Settling for Soft Bars

If you’ve been hesitant to try a shampoo bar because you’re worried about the "mush factor," or if you’re a maker who has been struggling with consistency, the wait is over. The Dough Method is the future of solid hair care, and we can't wait to share it with you.

Grab a kit to create at home or join us around the long table for a hands-on class in Sherwood Park, there’s never been a better time to make the switch. Let’s stop wasting water, stop throwing away plastic, and start making the best hair care of our lives.
