Vitamin E Decoded: MT-50 vs. USP Which form is best for your Hair and Skin?
Vitamin E Guide: MT-50 vs. USP which form is best for your hair and skin creations?
That’s a great question. I, too, found myself looking up the difference between the two forms of vitamin E. Recently, a few people have asked me about it again, so I wanted to clear things up in this post. When creating a nourishing hair oil or a healing skin balm, choosing the right form of Vitamin E can make a significant difference in your results.
What They Are
- MT-50 (Mixed Tocopherols / T-50): This is a natural, full-spectrum vitamin E blend. It contains about 50% mixed tocopherols (d-alpha, d-beta, d-gamma, and d-delta), diluted in a carrier such as GMO-free soybean oil. It provides broader antioxidant protection by including all four natural tocopherol forms. Our Vitamin E MT-50 is also ECOCERT certified, GMO and gluten-free.
- USP Vitamin E (often Cosmetic Grade): This is typically a more concentrated form, usually mostly d-alpha-tocopherol (often 67-87%) in a soybean oil base. "USP" refers to it meeting United States Pharmacopeia standards for purity and quality. It is the most biologically active form for the human body.
Vitamin E for Hair Care
Which is better for Hair Oil?
MT-50 wins for most hair oil makers because:
- Superior antioxidant performance: The mix of tocopherols (especially gamma and delta) offers broader protection against oxidation (rancidity) in your oil blends than alpha-tocopherol alone.
- Better value: It's often more cost-effective while being equally effective as an antioxidant at typical low usage rates (e.g., 0.5% of the oil phase).
Hair Usage Tips
- Typical amount: Use 0.5% to extend shelf life of carrier oils.
- Add 0.1 - 4% into your formula and into the cool phase (end of blending) to preserve its potency.
Vitamin E for Skin Care
Which is better for Skin?
While MT-50 is great for preventing your skin oils from going bad, USP Vitamin E is often the preferred choice for direct skin benefits like healing and moisturizing.
- Healing & Scars: d-alpha-tocopherol (the main component in USP Vitamin E) is the form of Vitamin E most readily absorbed and used by human skin. It is famous for its ability to support skin repair and reduce the appearance of scars.
- Intensive Moisture: USP Vitamin E is excellent in heavy creams, balms, and salves where you want a concentrated, moisturizing boost.
- Anti-Aging: Its antioxidant properties help protect skin cells from environmental damage (like UV rays and pollution).
Skin Usage Tips
- Antioxidant Protection: Use 0.5% - 1% in your lotions or balms to keep the oils fresh.
- Direct Treatment: For targeted skin repair (like a scar treatment), use 2-30% USP Vitamin E and for MT 50 use 0.1% - 4% in formulations.
Note: Pure Vitamin E is very thick; always dilute it in a carrier oil for easier application.
If your main goal is stabilizing your oils and keeping them fresh, go with MT-50. If you want the most potent skin-healing and regenerative properties, USP Vitamin E is your best bet, howeverMT-50 is a great economical choice.
At Wixy Soap, we believe in using the best ingredients for the job. Whether you're blending a hair serum or a winter skin salve, the right Vitamin E will ensure your creations are both effective and long-lasting!
- Store your finished hair oil in dark, airtight bottles away from heat/light.
- Both forms can darken or thicken slightly over time — that's normal.
For hair: Go with MT-50 for DIY hair oils — it's the go-to choice among many cosmetic formulators for its effectiveness, cost, and full-spectrum antioxidant power. USP is a solid backup if that's what you have or if you specifically want higher alpha-tocopherol.
If you're buying, check labels for "natural mixed tocopherols" or "MT-50/T-50" vs. "d-alpha tocopherol USP." Always patch-test and buy from reputable cosmetic suppliers (not supplement capsules, which aren't formatted the same way).
